چکیده

grammatic representations in reasoning and problem solving sponsored by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. The symposium brought together psychologists, computer scientists, and philosophers to discuss a range of issues covering both externally represented diagrams and mental images and both psychologyand AI-related issues. In this article, we develop a framework for thinking about the issues that were the focus of the symposium as well as report on the discussions that took place. We anticipate that traditional symbolic representations will increasingly be combined with iconic representations in future AI research and technology and that this symposium is simply the first of many that will be devoted to this topic.

What Makes a Bunch of Marks a Diagrammatic Representation, and Another Bunch a Sentential Representation?

While much has been written on the difference between diagrammatic and sentential representations (sometimes also called propositional or symbolic representations), the explanations don’t address the fact that, when viewed as marks on paper, interpreting the marks in both cases involves use of visual perception that takes account of the spatial arrangement of marks. This paper takes account of ...

Show Me How You Act on a Diagram and I'll Tell You What You Think (or: Spatial Structures as Organizing Schemes in Collaborative Human-Computer Reasoning)

Collaborative human-computer reasoning creates asymmetric reasoning situations in which the human and the computational partners possess dissimilar and, to some extent, even incomparable reasoning faculties. In order to produce a satisfactory performance, collaborative humancomputer reasoning requires that predictive cognitive processing models of the human reasoning partner are integrated with...

A Diagrammatic Reasoning System with Euler Circles

This paper is concerned with Euler diagrammatic reasoning. Proof-theory has traditionally been developed based on linguistic (symbolic) representations of logical proofs. Recently, however, logical reasoning based on diagrammatic or graphical representations has been investigated by many logicians. Euler diagrams were introduced in the 18th century by Leonhard Euler [1768]. But it is quite rece...

Diagrammatic Reasoning: Route Planning on Maps with ACT-R

Diagrammatic Reasoning Diagrammatic reasoning, reasoning from graphical representations rather than from word-based representations, is pervasive in our society. Computers allow us to easily design and transmit diagrams that encapsulate a variety of information. Maps are specific instances of diagrams that are used to provide current and projected information (Chandrasekaran et al., 2002); for ...

1. A Topological Framework for Modeling Diagrammatic Reasoning Tasks

We propose to model some diagrammatic reasoning tasks within a topological framework. We only focus on problems that require a specific diagrammatic reasoning procedure to be solved rather than on reasoning on diagrams. To model such cognitive tasks, we propose to represent the problem with topological objects and to model the diagrammatic operations performed on them as topological operations....
